Abena is the founder of Curls-AuNaturel (based in the UK). If you happen to be on that side of the pond, you can make an appointment with her to wash and style your natural hair using natural hair treatments that range anywhere from yogurt to honey.
I met her through my blog since we share a mutual love for natural hair and natural products.

1. SHG: Share with us a little bit about your own natural hair journey.
Abena: I have never really been a big relaxer fan. I used to relax my hair twice a year. In May around my birthday and December for Christmas. I felt my hair was too thick to manage and went against my dad and relaxed it for the first time when I was 16.
At first I decided to go natural just because I could. I had seen a lot of Naturals and liked the fullness and curl patters of their hair. I did my big chop in June 2013. That was the start of a beautiful relationship with myself and finding myself all together. I found out there was so much versatility with my natural hair. My hair was still thick, but now I knew what it liked and what tricks and tips I could do to manage it. It then dawned on me like many others, we had not been open to all the information and possibilities of Natural hair. It exuberates inner confidence and self-awareness. That’s one of the reasons Curls-AuNaturel was started.
2. SHG: How long have you had an interest in natural hair and hair products?
Abena: A little over a year now. It’s fascinating how much information there is about being a Natural, how to manage and maintain it, etc. But, then again too much information could be bad so it’s good to know not to go overboard.
3. SHG: What is your favorite thing about being natural and why?
Abena: Well, aside from the fact that people ask me if it’s my hair or if they can touch it, it’s amazing. I can have long hair today and with the help of shrinkage, rock a short do the next. Natural hair screams versatility. My hair doesn’t define me, but it’s my statement. It’s an accessory I wear proudly.
4. SHG: If you could only choose one product or service for your hair what would it be and why?
Abena: Not to be biased, but I would choose Curls-AuNaturel Shea butter – it’s food to my hair. It’s made from unrefined whisked shea butter infused with rosemary, lavender, peppermint and pure olive oil. It always leaves my hair moisturized for days and also fights dandruff. It gives my hair life.
5. SHG: What is the one piece of advice you just have to always share with people about natural hair?
Abena: Natural hair growth isn’t a competition. Neither is there a magic product that gives you a beautiful mane overnight. The most important thing any Natural can have is patience! Patience will give you a long beautiful healthy mane.
Another thing you can’t go without is moisture. Water is your hair’s best friend. Spritz your hair as often as possible to make your hair easier to manage and keep it moist and moisturized.
